Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

About Our Services

Question: How can I find a good supplier from a particular industry in Taiwan?

Answer: A good way to do so is via the Australia-Taiwan Information Network, where you can post your demands and needs in both English and Chinese languages, for FREE. Because the network has two corresponding sites, one in English in Australia and the other in Chinese in Taiwan, it will enable Taiwanese businesses, groups and individuals all over the world to see your requests and make appropriate response.

Alternatively, please check out our Recommended Links page, where you can find links to useful sites that introduce Taiwan's trade and industrial developments. Some of these sites offer lists of Taiwanese exporters and manufacturers.

Question: I would like to contact a specific supplier in Taiwan, but I do not speak Chinese (or Taiwanese)?
Answer: Taiwan.com.au Portal offers English-Chinese Translation and Interpretation service. Whether it is in conversation or in writing, or an occasion such as business conference, seminar, presentation, tour, or other kinds of formal gathering, our staff are able to provide professional and friendly service in a way that is convenient to you.

Question: How can I promote my products and/or services to potential clients in Taiwan?

Answer: Taiwan.com.au Portal offers valuable Internet space for Australian businesses, groups and individuals who would like to promote their products and/or services to their counterparts in Taiwan. We provide Web Site Hosting service in both English and Chinese languages.

Alternatively, Australia's government agencies, corporates and small and medium business operators may secure a spot in Taiwan.com.au Portal's various prominent pages, where they can promote their visions, achievements, products and services to worldwide Internet users, in both English and Chinese. Please see our Sponsorship page.

Question: Why should I subscribe to The Taiwan.com.au Portal Newsletter?

Answer: The Taiwan.com.au Newsletter is a quarterly English-language publication that covers prominent political, economic, societal and cultural events in Australia and Taiwan. Topics of discussion are chosen to reflect the sometimes different but often similar values, beliefs and trends observed in Australian and Taiwanese societies. A book review dealing with a relevant subject helps readers gain an alternative understanding of these topics. For example, in the January-March 2006 issue of the newsletter, the "Issue in Australia" section investigates Australia's views on death penalty, as demonstrated in the case of an Vietnamese Australian who was hanged in Singapore for drug trafficking. The "Issue in Taiwan" section explores Taiwan's current plan to gradually abolish capital punishment, while the "Book Review" section introduces an Australian novel that depicts experiences of Vietnamese communities and individuals in Australia.

In this sense, the Taiwan.com.au Portal Newsletter is a valuable channel through which readers get to better understand Australian and Taiwanese societies. All readers who are interested in the communications between Australia and Taiwan will be benefited from our objective coverage and analysis of various aspects of these two societies.

About Australian "Chinese" Literature

Question: Surely there are more Chinese writers in Australia and other countries than those currently introduced?
Answer: Yes, there are, and we welcome constant suggestions and comments from our Internet users regarding which writers and their books we should review in our web site. We currently have plans to launch a book that specifically focuses on Australia's Chinese communities and writers. Meanwhile, we will keep publishing more reviews on English-language books produced by Chinese writers in Australia and other parts of the world.

Question: The books sold by Amazon.com are so expensive, particularly those published in Australia.

Answer: Yes, they are expensive, because many individuals who offer to sell their copies of books published in Australia via Amazon.com often just put the prices up. It is regrettable that Amazon.com does not check whether these prices are reasonable or ridiculous.

Nonetheless, we have plans to establish direct partnerships with Australian publishers, so that books written by Australian writers and/or published in Australia can be promoted and even sold in Taiwan.com.au at reasonable prices. More details will be posted in our site in the future.

About The Naughties Club

Question: Why does The Naughties Club have such a "naughty" name?

Answer: As introduced in "Our Goal" of The Naughties Club, the first ten years of the 21st century are commonly referred to as "the Naughties". The term suggests innocence and creative subversion. Being one of "the Naughties" is to extend all existing boundaries in an innovative and playful way.

Some of our members have expressed concern that the term "naughties" may mislead Internet users to sites containing pornography. Alternative terms such as the "noughties" have also been suggested. Indeed, one is likely to find that currently on the Internet, the number of sites that use the term "naughties" and that of those using "noughties" are about equal.

We continue to use the term "naughties" because we trust that our members have sound judgments and unbiased worldviews. The existence of pornographic sites is a regrettable fact. However, we can do our best to eliminate the negative impact of this fact on our future generations, by maintaining a healthy mindset and encouraging our children to tell right from wrong. It is our firm belief that only with proper guidance and assistance from parents that children can enjoy the most benefits offered by the Internet.

Question: Will The Naughties Club's web site and newsletter have a Chinese version soon?
Answer: Currently we do not have plans to do so because of budgetary limits. However, we will endeavor to provide a Chinese version of The Naughties Club's web site and newsletter if there is enough support from our Internet users.

Question: How is Taiwan.com.au Portal doing?
Answer: Thanks for asking. We are doing very well. Since Taiwan.com.au Portal experienced a major overhaul in August 2005, the numbers of visitors and pageviews to the site have both been growing steadily and continuously. We currently have more than 35,000 visitors viewing more than 65,000 pages per month. This may not be a significant achievement when compared to other prominent web sites long existing on the Internet, but as a relatively young site we are definitely working hard here. We hope that in the near future we will be able to achieve the goal of having more than 3,000 visitors per day.
