Proper footwear, stretches will help plantar heel, says expert

This article was published by the Taiwan News on March 11, 2006. It is about the plantar fascittis, or plantar heel, which is an inflammation of the band of tissue that runs around the heel. The inflammation can cause discomfort and even pain to the heel.

According to joint and muscle specialists, the plantar fascia serves as the body's natural shock absorber. Excessive pressure or improper footwear can wear down the elasticity of the tissue and trigger pain whenever the foot comes into contact with hard objects, such as the floor. The condition occurs mostly in middle-aged women, but more young girls are reporting the problems these days because they wear high heels.

However, joint and muscle specialists point out that both women and men are likely to suffer from the condition. Incorrect footwear, obesity, prolonged periods of walking or standing, or constant pressure on the foot (such as jumping) are all factors that may contribute to and aggravate the condition.

According to experts, people with heel pain should avoid walking barefoot. It is also important to buy shoes in the afternoon because people's feet are their normal size during these hours.

Most importantly, all people, including those without heel pain, should do daily stretching exercises to strengthen and relax the connective tissues on the heel before stepping out of bed each morning. Exercises, such as pulling the ball of the foot slightly towards the body for 10 to 15 seconds with a belt or a towel, can ease the tension in the foot area.
