Lesbians in Taiwan: A bed of rosesThis article was written by Bradley Winterton and published by The Taipei Times on July 13, 2003. It reviews the book "The Emerging Lesbian", whose subtitle is "Female Same -- Sex Desire in Modern China" (University of Chicago Press, 2003). In the words of Winterton: "[The book] holds Taiwan in reserve until its final chapters. But when it eventually turns to the island, it comes out with all guns blazing." The book's author Sang Tze-lin proclaims that "since the early 1990s, Taiwan has pioneered the emergence and definition of a lesbian identity in a way that's unique in the Chinese-speaking world". In other words, Sang is suggesting that Taiwan is the most progressive place for a gay and lesbian identity in East Asia, except for Japan. |
