Major International Sporting Events to be Held in Taiwan

As introduced by the Tawian Yearbook 2006:

The World Games 2009 in Kaohsiung

On June 14, 2004, Kaohsiung City signed a contract with the International World Games Association to host The World Games 2009. This marked the first time Taiwan had ever been chosen to host a major international sporting event.

The World Games, the second-largest international sporting event after the Olympics, are held every four years and include some 30 sports that are not in the Olympics, such as aikido, bowling, climbing, fistball, handball, ju-jitsu, karate, and korfball.

Scheduled for July 16-26, 2009, the eighth World Games in Kaohsiung will feature 34 sports, two more than The World Games 2005 in Duisburg, Germany. The organizers expect the Games to involve more than 3,000 athletes from 90 nations.

2009 Summer Deaflympics in Taipei

The Chinese Taipei Sports Association of the Deaf beat its Greek counterpart in winning the right to host the 21st Summer Deaflympics, which will be held in Taipei City from September 5-15, 2009. The Deaflympics was the first tournament ever organized for athletes with a disability. The most recent Summer Deaflympics was held in Melbourne, Australia, in 2005. The organizers of the 2009 Summer Deaflympics in Taipei expect some 6,000 athletes from more than 100 nations to compete.
