Aborigines take step on road to autonomy

The Executive Yuan passed two draft bills in early June to address President Chen Shui-bian's campaign promise to safeguard aboriginal people's rights and interests in autonomy, employment and social welfare. If passed by the Legislature, the law will take Taiwan's native population a step closer to the sort of autonomy they have long been campaigning for.
