Taiwan's economic achievements are well known overseas, and because of the National Palace Museum and a thriving religious scene, the country is regarded as a repository of traditional Chinese culture. However, in the field of contemporary art, Taiwan has yet to make an international impact. In part one of his two-part look at the foreign artist community in Taiwan, regular Taiwan Journal contributor Steven Crook examines why so many foreign artists find the country to be such a congenial place to live and work.
