Airlines to increase fuel surcharge on international flights, says CAA

This article was published by the Taiwan Headlines on March 24, 2006. It reports that according to the Civil Aeronautics Administration, Taiwanese airlines will arise fuel surcharges on their international routes in April, in order to cope with high fuel prices in the international market.

Starting on April 6, Taiwan's six carriers will increase the surcharge from US$12.5 to US$15 for each short-haul flight, and from US$32.5 to US$39 for each long-haul flight. The fuel levies are imposed because these airline companies can no longer absorb the additional fuel costs caused by rising oil prices.

Fuel surcharges were first imposed in Taiwan in June 2004, in order to help local airlines cope with their increasing operation costs caused by global oil price hikes. There were initially expected to last for only three months.
