The Republic of China on Taiwan celebrated its 94th birthday on October 10, with a series of celebratory activities held all over the island. Tens of thousands of local and overseas Taiwanese, as well as foreign dignitaries and reporters, attended these well-designed events.

President Chen Shui-bian delivered a speech to the nation. In his speech, Chen reiterated his government's commitment to push for reform of Taiwan's Constitution, taxation, media and financial systems. He expressed hope that these reforms will help bring justice and prosperity to Taiwanese society.

The theme of this year's National Day celebrations focused on solidarity, ethnic harmony and cultural diversity. An armed forces honor guard, students and private groups from around the country gave performances in Taipei. A cocktail reception was also held in Taipei, in which more than 3,600 local and foreign dignitaries participated.

The annual National Day fireworks display was held in southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung County, while an evening party took place in central Taiwan's Changhua County. These were part of the government's efforts to balance regional development.

The National Day marks the Wuchang Uprising of October 10, 1911, which put an end to the Ching Dynasty and paved the way for the founding of the Republic of China.
