Cross-strait ties hinge on Beijing democratization
This article was from the Central News Agency and published by the Macroview Weekly on September 14, 2005. Premier Frank Hsieh recently remarked that he believes dialogue across the Taiwan Strait would be easier if China were to democratize. "Hopefully, China could move toward democratic reform following its successful economic development. We believe that cross-strait dialogue would become easier once China evolves into a democracy," Hsieh said. In a recent opinion poll, more than 58 percent of the respondents said they agree to the view that the government's leadership is needed in talks with China in order to better protect Taiwan's national interests. |
