Taiwan to stage war games amid tension with China, report says

 

This article was published by the Taiwan Headlines on March 7, 2006. It reports that Taiwan will stage the nation's largest-ever military exercises in July 2006. More than 20,000 soldiers will be mobilized for the exercises, which will be held in northern Taiwan's Yilan County.

The military exercises are intended to "assess the defense capabilities backed up by some newly acquired weaponry. Codenamed "Hankuang 22", the exercises will begin in April with computer simulated events and climax with live fire drills in July. On display will be the Kidd class destroyers, F-16 jet fighters, AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopters, and E-2C airborne early warning and command aircraft.

More details of the military exercises have yet to be finalized.
