3D industry alliance launched to boost Taiwan's capacity

This article was published by the Macroview Weekly on August 22, 2007. It reports that Taiwan's research institutions and 3D product manufacturers recently forged a new strategic alliance on three-dimensional interaction and display, with the aim of boosting local research and production capacity in related areas.

According to the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and another 20-strong member companies, the alliance will focus on technology for 3D interactive imaging and 3D display on liquid crystal display (LCD) -- both of which are regarded as the next promising fields in the digital industry, with an estimated seven-fold expansion in global market value by 2010.

According to the ITRI's Electronics and Optoelectronics Research Laboratory, 3D interactive imaging technology ca be adapted to various products, such as customized 3D photo albums, interactive computer games and even 3D personal medical advisors that can allow doctors run remote diagnosis on patients.

Conventional 3D displays require at least two to three projectors working simultaneously to produce stereo images on large screens. However, the 3D display technology under research and development in Taiwan can easily create 3D images on LCD displays without additional equipment.
