Exports of Hsinchu Science Park soar

 

This article was published by the Macroview Weekly on July 4, 2007. It reports that exports from the Hsinchu Science Park totalled NT$54.15 billion (US$1.65 billion) in May, up 9.33 percent from the previous month and marking a single-month high so far this year.

The May figure also marked an increase of 14.41 percent over the year-earlier level.

Of the park's six major manufacturing sectors, the optoelectronics sector posted NT$20.71 billion worth of exports, up a whopping 124.12 percent year-on-year.

Exports from the optoelectronics sector in May constituted 38.2 percent of the total exports form the park for that month, a record high and representing only 10.2 percentage points less than that posted by the semiconductor sector, which is the largest sector in the park.

Meanwhile, the semiconductor sector registered NT$26.22 billion worth of exports in may, down 10.2 percent from the same month of the previous year. The sector's exports made up 48.4 percent of the total exports from the park in May.

Other sectors, including computer peripherals, communications and biotech, recorded declines in exports in May, down 23.36 percent, 7 percent and 63 percent, respectively, from the year-earlier levels.

Meanwhile, exports of the precision machinery sector in May posted a year-on-year increase of 1.4 percent.

The park's exports stood at NT$239.64 billion in the first five months of this year, marking an increase of 5.91 percent from the corresponding period of 2006.
