Home security a main concern, survey reveals

This article was published by the Taiwan Headlines on November 30, 2006. It reports that while entertainment is still the top use for digital product home users in Taiwan, more users see home security as one of the most important functions when buying digital products.

According to a recent survey commissioned by the Office of Committee for Information Industry Development under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, entertainment is the main reason people use digital products when they are home. However, when they are away from home, home security issues become their primary concern, and they expect to constantly monitor home security with new digital technologies.

The survey, conducted by the Topology Research Institute, focused on identifying the needs of digital product home users in Taiwan. "The results told us that home security and distance home care will be the future trends," organizers of the survey said.

According to the survey, the top three products on the wish list of digital product home users are Internet-connected televisions, smartphones and/or PDAs, and home entertainment computers.

The survey also found that brand has become the leading factor when users buy home digital products, as 31.1 percent of respondents said that it was their No.1 concern. Functionality was the No.2 concern, at 28.7 percent.

Furthermore, according to organizers of the survey, mobile phones are expected to become the main device for people to monitor home security and control home equipment in the future.

Finally, according to the survey, users in southern Taiwan are more willing to buy home digital products than their counterparts in northern and central Taiwan.
