Conservationist group debuts anti-nuke short film
This article was published by the Taiwan Headlines on April 25, 2006. It features a short film recently released by the non-profit conservationist group No Nuke Union in Taiwan, in which a nude model is presented. The release of the short film was to mark the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident and to oppose a nuclear power plant under construction in Taiwan. In the short film, the nude model showed her back carrying four Chinese characters, which read "Better Nude Than Nuke". "The purpose [of the short film] is to draw attention of those people who ignore the importance of environmental protection," representatives of the conservationist group said. The Chernobyl accident took place on April 26, 2006, as the world's worst civilian nuclear diaster. According to the conservationist group, Taiwan has not learned from the painful lesson and continues building a new nuclear reactor. Chernobyl therefore marked the beginning of Taiwan's anti-nuclear campaign. In related news, Lee Yuan-tseh, the 1986 Nobel laureate in chemistry and current head of Taiwan's highest academic body Academia Sinica, recently said that the nation needs nuclear power to avoid relying on imported energy. According to Lee, Taiwan should extend the life of its three nuclear plants or build more thermal power plants. Taiwan's fourth nuclear power plant, which is currently under construction, has been mired in controversy for years. |
