Taiwan-made LCD TVs to take 30% global share in 2006: MIC

This article was published by the Taiwan Headlines on March 14, 2006. It reports that in 2005, Taiwan accounted for 25 percent of the global supply of LCD TVs. It is expected that Taiwan's share in the global market will grow to about 30 percent in 2006.

According to the Market Intelligence Center under the Institute for Information Industry, thanks to continuous influx of orders from big international brands, Taiwanese producers are able to increase their share in the global LCD TV market. Major LCD TV brands are expected to further lower their prices in 2006 as an attempt to maintain current market shares. Therefore, many of them are expected to release their contract orders to Taiwanese companies.

Other industry analysts point out that in recent years Taiwanese companies have mainly won contract orders for TV models that are 20 inches and under, because the Japanese brands in this segment are no longer cost competitive in producing small monitors. On the other hand, purchases of multi-function LCD monitors (which can be used to watch TV) are expected to rise at a high speed and replace those LCD TVs that are less than 20-inch in size.

Meanwhile, industry analysts argue that more and more international TV brands have released or are releasing their orders for panels that are 32 inches and above, to Taiwanese thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panel manufacturers. With the increasing capacities from their sixth-generation (6G)-and-beyond panel facilities, these Taiwanese panel manufacturers are expected to gradually ramp up their shipments of over-32-inch TV panels and win an increasing share of that market.
