AUO to showcase new products, technologies at FPD Taiwan 2006

This article was published by the Taiwan Headlines on June 14, 2006. It reports that Taiwan's AU Optronics Corp. (AUO) is scheduled to participate in FPD Taiwan 2006, which will take place at the Taipei World Trade Center from June 14 to 16, 2006.

At the show, AUO will introduce a new generation of LCD TV panels that feature low color washout, high contrast, a wide viewing angle, enhanced sharpness, a wide color gamut, and vivid color performance. The company will also feature large-sized panel applications, such as LCD TVs and wide-format desktop PC monitors.

More significantly, at the show, AUO will introduce its key technologies for high definition TV (HDTV). For example, the low color washout, high contrast ratio and wide viewing angle are made possible by the company's Advanced MVA technology (AMVA). Other technologies include the improved motion-picture quality with simulated pulsed driving (SPD), the LED backlight modules with HiColor technology that achieve more than 100 percent color saturation, and the image-processing technology for more natural color images and enhanced saturation.

According to AUO, at the show, these four breakthrough technologies for LCD TV products will be shown to the public for the first time via its new 37-inch TV panels. These are the technologies that distinguish the company's LCD TVs from those produced by its peers.

Meanwhile, for medium- to small-sized products, AUO will focus on car displays as well as displays for cell phones, including the world's first commercialized double-emission active matrix organic light-emit diode (AMOLED) panel. The new 2.8-inch low temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) panel has VGA (640 x 480 pixels) resolution, transflective MVA technology that ensures better readability in sunlight, and a high 350:1 contrast ratio. These features make the panel an ideal solution for mobile applications.

According to AUO, another mobility-related new product is its 200-gram, 12.1-inch notebook PC panel, which has glass measuring just 0.3 mm in thickness and a LED backlight.

According to AUO, its mainstream products in 2006 focus on large-sized products, while its medium- to small-sized products focus on high resolution. In the former case, the company's 42-inch panel will be equipped with AMVA technology, which has low color washout and high contrast ratio of above 1200:1. Some of AUO"s high-level desktop PC monitor products have also adopted AMVA technology.

AUO predicts that there will be a trend toward wide-screen and larger-sized panels for desktop PC monitor products. In the mean time, while traditional 19-inch panels with cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) can reach 92 percent of the standard set by Taiwan's National Television System Committee, AUO"s 20.1-inch panel with a LED backlight can raise the color gamut to 104 percent of this standard.
