This article was published by the Taiwan Headlines on May 11, 2006. It reports that American company Corning Inc. recently announced its plan to expand its eighth-generation (8G) liquid crystal display (LCD) glass-substrate manufacturing capacity at a facility in Japan. The company expects to begin 8G commercial shipments from Japan in the third quarter of 2006.

According to Corning, the global LCD glass market is likely to grow 40 percent to 50 percent in volume in 2006. More significantly, LCD TV penetration should reach 19 percent of the total TV market in 2006, compared with 11 percent in 2005.

In response to the growing demand for large-new generation LCD glass substrates, Corning has fully expanded its facility in Tainan in southern Taiwan. The company also has also begun construction of a second facility in Taichung in central Taiwan in January 2006.

Corning recently decided to establish a facility in Beijing. Its venture with South Korea's Samsung Electronics, which is called Samsung Corning Precision Glass Co., Ltd., has also expanded its new-generation size capacity at its facility in Korea.
