Beigang Chaotian Temple
The Chaotian Temple is dedicated to Matsu, the Goddess of the Sea. In recent years it has become one of the most prestigious Matsu temples in Taiwan. Another deity worshipped in the temple is the Guanshiyin, the Goddess of Mercy. The Chaotian Temple is grand and beautiful. The poles and beams are covered with delicate wood carvings, and the four stone dragon sculptures forming the four poles outside the temple are equally majestic. The excellent craftsmanship is displayed everywhere, particularly on the facial expressions of the figures on the windows. The temple as a whole is a combination of religion and arts. Numerous local and international visitors come to the Chaotian Temple throughout the year. The two greatest religious festivals here are on January 15th (Lantern Festival) and March 23rd (birthday of Matsu) of the lunar calendar. During the Lantern Festival, decorative lamp competitions are held. On the birthday of Matsu, followers and worshippers from affiliated temples come here to for all kinds of celebrations and parades. The whole town is filled with the sound of traditional Chinese instruments playing and many people cheering. The parades are the highlight of the town's celebration activities for Matsu. |
