Gaomei Wetlands
Gaomei was called Kao Mi in Qing Dynasty. It was renamed Gaomei during the Japanese colonial occupation of Taiwan (1895-1945). The wetlands here are over 300 hectares, even though the area is only one-tenth of the Dadu River's wetlands. The soils here in Gaomei Wetlands are mixed with mud and sand. The unique ecology breeds diversified organisms for both plants and animals. Research shows that animals here include birds, fishes, crabs and invertebrates. In fact, Gaomei Wetlands is one of the few places in Taiwan that has wild ducks. |
