Baguashan Scenic Area

The Baguashan (Mt Bagua) Scenic Area is located in Mingjian Township in central Taiwan's Nantou County. The area's prominent scenic spots cover both Changhua County and Nantou County.

The Baguashan Scenic Area situates on a plateau about one kilometer from the eastern side of Changhua County. The whole plateau is tilting from north to south, so that from the mountain top visitors can see the streets of the whole Changhua City as well as fishing boats in the distant sea. This unique geographical feature had made the area a very important military guarding point in the past. During the Japanese colonial occupation of Taiwan (1895-1945), the Japanese demolished the local resistance force here in order to control the whole central Taiwan region. Today, a memorial hall has been built here in honor of those who died in the battles against the Japanese armies. Two cannons used in the battles are also displayed here.

The Baguashan Scenic Area is perhaps most famous for its giant Buddha statue. The statue measures 72 feet in height from its lotus seat to the top, and its base occupies a total area of seven hectares. The whole body of the Buddha is built of steel bars and cement. In front of the statue stand two lion sculptures. Inside the statue there are six separate levels. The lowest level is a small worship hall. The second to the fifth levels exhibit Buddha's work during his lifetime.
