Southwest Coast National Scenic Area

The Southwest Coast National Scenic Area stretches along Taiwan's southwest coast across Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Tainan County and Tainan City. In contrast to the northern and eastern coastlines, which are characterized by steep cliffs and rugged mountains, the southwestern coast of Taiwan is largely flat. Many areas serve as natural habitats for wildlife including migratory birds and other coastal dwellers.

In order to protect these precious natural habitats and to create a recreational area for local and international visitors, a new national scenic area was established in 2005. The national scenic area is administered by the Tourism Bureau.

The Southwest Coast National Scenic Area is known for its sand banks, marshes, river deltas and wetlands. These are home to a large number of endemic bird species and serve as a resting place for many migratory birds during the winter. In addition to its ecological value, this scenic area has many other attractions, including the traditional production of salt from sea water, the local fishing industry, old temples and other historic sites. A trip around the area is definitely worthwhile.

The Southwest Coast National Scenic Area Administration is located in Beimen Township in Tainan County.
