Aogu Wetlands

The Aogu Wetlands is located in Dongshi Township in west-central Taiwan's Chiayi County. It belongs to the Taiwan Salt Corporation's sea plain new land in the county. Local and international visitors have to go through the company's lands before they are able to see this wide ecological treasure land of more than 300 hectares.

The Aogu Wetlands is currently the biggest wetland in Taiwan. The area's ecological space consists of lagoons, sand bars, fishing farms and beefwood forests. A large number of water birds are attracted to this area, including Egrets, Black Drongos, Japanese White-eyes, Grey Plovers, Black-Headed Gulls, Moorhens, Northern Shovelers and Night Egrets. Visitors are welcome to hire a bamboo raft and go to the sea to have an excellent view of the wetland.

There is no visitor's center here, nor any information boards. Local and international visitors are encouraged to bring a field guide and binoculars. The access road is too small for tour buses, so relatively few people come here often. As a consequence, the wildlife here has been able to thrive largely undisturbed. Prepare to spend at least three hours here to enjoy the area's natural beauty.
