Fenchihu Scenic Area

The Fenchihu Scenic Area is located in Chuchi Township in west-central Taiwan's Chiayi County. At 1,405 meters above sea level, it marks the halfway point on the way to the top of Alishan (Mt Ali) on the renowned forest railway. This is a perfect stop-off point where tourists can relax and enjoy refreshments and snacks.

In Fenchihu, local and international visitors have to try the famous "Alishan Railway Lunchbox" and other snacks such as the special "train cake".

Fenchihu owes its existence to the Alishan Forest Railway. In the past, this was the major center for repair and maintenance on the railroad. Today, the railway's equipment mostly gets services in Chiayi City and Fenchihu's role has diminished. However, there are hints of the town's former glory in the Train Depot, which has a few marvelous old train engines on display.

With the decline of the logging industry, Fenchihu now survives mainly on tourist business. There are many hiking trails in the area, which are well worth exploring.
