Chiayi City

The Tropic of Cancer bisects central Taiwan, across Chiayi County in the west and Hualien County in the east. Just outside Chiayi City, there is a monument that marks its latitude.

Some of the earliest pioneers from China's Fujian Province landed in Chiayi City. They settled in the area near today's Hsingang Township. During the famous Lin Shuang-wen rebellion in 1786, hundreds of local residents died fighting against the Qing government's imperial army. Details of this historical event are recorded in the artifacts preserved in the Yimin Pagoda in Chiayi City.
