Beitou residents get fired up about ceramics history
This article was from The United Daily News and published by The Taiwan Headlines on June 17, 2003. A few years back, students and teachers from Beitou Elementary School wrote a letter supporting the preservation of Beitou's public baths. The letter attracted much attention among local residents and spurred the creation of the Beitou Hot Springs Museum, which has become the focal point of local identity. Today, a new wave of cultural consciousness is arising among the people in Beitou. Beitou Cultural Foundation Director Hong Te-jen, ceramics scholar Chen Hsin-shang, and Beitou Community College Director Pan Peng-shan have organized "Concerned Citizens for Beitou Ceramics". They hope to promote the establishment of a Beitou ceramics culture park near Guizigang, the origin of ceramics in the area, in order to revitalize the Beitou kilns and put them back in a leading position in Taiwanese ceramics. |
