Black-faced Spoonbill Reserve

Black-faced spoonbills are near extinction in the world and carefully protected. In 2003, Taiwan's Bird-Watching Association counted almost 100 black-faced spoonbills flying from the northeast area of Korea and China on every October to stay in the mouth of Zengwen River in the winter. Because of their rarity, these birds have become the most famous animals in Taiwan.

Black-faced spoonbills arrive here on every September and October and leave on next March to May. This period is the best for watching these birds in Cigu. Because they usually take rest in the daytime and forage at night, at about 4pm to 5pm everyday they would gather together and play, bathe or clean feathers for each other.

In addition to black-faced spoonbills, there are about 200 kinds of birds gathering in the mouth of Zengwen River, such as gull, snipe, turtledove, and Chinese bulbul. Generally, more migrating birds can be seen in winter.
