Chenhai City (Sitsao Fortress)

Chenhai City, or Sitsao Fortress, was built during the Opium War of 1840. At that time, Ching (Qing) officials stationed in Taiwan suggested that the government should build a defensive fortress at each of the 17 ports along Taiwan's coast to prevent the British troops from invading the island. Sitsao Fortress was one of these fortresses. Since then it had protected Taiwan, together with the Anping Fort (Fort Zeelandia) on the opposite shore and the Yi Tzai Golden Castle (Eternal Fortress) built at a later time.

The cannon base of the fortress was originally for temporary use. Over a dozen of well-preserved cannon holes in a line can still be found on the fortress. The breastwork of the fortress is made with stone plates or pebbles about the height of a person. There are inverted V-shaped cannon holes on the wall, too.

Part of the fortress was ruined by typhoons in 1969, but was restored later. After the restoration of Taiwan in 1945, the wall of the fortress became the fencing of a primary school. In front of the fortress stands a temple, the valuable mangrove reserve is behind it, and countless salt pans and fish farms are around it.
