Tainan Canal

The Tainan Canal was designed by Matsumoto during the Japanese colonial occupation of Taiwan (1895-1945) and completed in 1926. It has not only been witness to over seven decades of Tainan history; to many local people, it also remains a spot associated with fond memories. Reflecting a strong grassroots awareness shared by all citizens of Tainan, what sets the canal apart from the rest of the famous waterways is that it remains exclusive to Tainan, as it connects the heart of everyone here.

Riding along the canal, visitors will arrive at Anping Port, where ships and yachts of all sizes are moored. It always gives one a good feeling to see all the fishing vessels heading back to the port with loads of fishery catches. The statue of the Goddess of the Sea, set afar from the fishing port, overlooking the ocean, seems to guard the people of this area. It is believed that the goddess will bring good fortune and health.

The deep-ocean fish market in front of the canal is being developed into a tourist fish market. It is hoped that Anping Port will soon recapture its former glory in the very near future.
