Sand Island (Shadau)
To
the east of the Sail Rock, in Hengchun Township in southern Taiwan's Pingtung
County, there is a beautiful stretch of beach that is called the Sand
Island, or Shadau. The sand here is particularly white, for it is made
up primarily of ground seashell. The unusually high level of purity (97.68
percent seashell sand) has made the Sand Island a protected area so that
the beach is off-limits to the public.
Located near the beach is the Seashell Sand Exhibition Hall, which is
a hands-on display of the Sand Island's special sand.
