Little Liouchiou

Little Liouchiou is located at the southwest of southern Taiwan's Pingtung County, about 8 sea miles off the shore. The Dutch people called it the "Golden lion island". When Chinese migrants began to arrive at Taiwan in large groups in the 17th century, they thought that the island looked like a small ball on the sea and called it "Little Liouchiou". The name has been used since then.

Local and international visitors go to Little Liouchiou to enjoy the ocean. Because it is the only clay insular in Taiwan, the bottom of the island contains many kinds of colorful tropical fish species. Meanwhile, the Paisha Bay is the best place on the island for diving. The white sand beach is also great for floating.

About 80 percent of the people in Little Liouchiou catch fish for a living. While the fishermen in Taiwan proper have great faith in Matsu, Goddess of the Sea, the fishermen here believe in the Chen Chin Goddess, the Wu Fu God, and the Kuan Buddha in the Biyun Temple. People here also go to the temple and ask the Kuan Buddha for all kinds of directions about life.

The Vase Rock is the most prominent natural scenic spot of Little Liouchiou. The head of the rock is big and the neck is thin. The rock is about 9 meters high. The most interesting about this rock is that wild flowers grow on its top, where there is no soil.
