Kenting National Forest Recreation Area

The Kenting National Forest Recreation Area is located in Hengchun Township in southern Taiwan's Pingtung County. The park covers about 435 hectares, of which 76 hectares are open to the public. The area features more than 1,200 species of plants, which are arranged according to their species. There are also specially designated areas for medical plants, tropical fruits, rubber trees, etc.

The area's 17 scenic points are linked together by walking paths, which offer local and international visitors maximum convenience to view both the plants and the area's natural scenery. Sites not to be missed include the Looking-glass Tree, which is more than 400 years old and has unusual buttress-shaped roots that grow above ground. The Fairy Cave is a 137-meter-long cave of stalactites and stalagmites, all lit up by lamplight. The area's observation tower is a 27-meter-high structure, from which the southernmost tip of Taiwan and the far away Orchid Island to the east can be seen. Finally, the Valley of the Hanging Banyans features hills and cliffs that are overgrown by aerial roots.
