Meinong

Meinong is the hometown of paper umbrellas. According to Hakka customs, paper umbrella is the symbol of a circle and represents family union. In Chinese pronunciation, the sounds of "paper" and "son" are so similar that the Chinese take paper umbrellas as a dowry. In recent years, the paper umbrellas are considered as an art. As many teahouses use them as a decoration, a fashion to restore the ancient ways of making paper umbrellas has helped spreading the fame of Meinong's products.

In addition to the Hakka culture, delicious food and paper umbrellas, handmade pottery has become another popular industry in Meinong in recent years. The three most well-known kilns are Meinong, Shichao and Dongmen, and they all have different styles. Yong-an Old Street is another place one cannot miss. It was developed in early years, with a lot of traditional houses and abundant historical cultures. Among all ancient buildings on the street is the house of Mr Chuen-Yu Lin, which successfully preserves the characteristics of red brick buildings.

Around Meinong, the beautiful scenery of Chungcheng Lake and the unique Taiwanese yellow butterflies in the Yellow Butterflies Green Valley have made these two places worth paying a visit. In addition, Mr Chung-li Ho Memorial Museum was built to memorize the pioneer of Taiwanese folk literature. The museum has collected the original manuscripts and works of Mr Ho and other significant writers. It is the first non-government museum established to memorize Taiwan's writers.
