Chijin Tienhou Temple (Matzu Temple)

 

The Chijin Tienhou Temple (Matzu Temple) is one of the oldest architectural structure in Kaohsiung City. Dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea, Matzu, protector of mariners and fishermen, it was constructed in 1691. Every year, on the 23rd day of the third lunar month, the temple hosts special festivals in honor of the goddess's birthday.

The temple has two halls and two chapels. Despite several revamps, it still maintains a simple and unsophisticated look. A symbol of Kaohsiung rising from fishing activities, the temple witness the development of Takou.
