Chihou Battery
Strategically located in defense of Kaohsiung Harbor, Chihou Mountain had been set with batteries during the rein of Ching (Qing) Dynasty's Emperor Kanghsi. After the harbor of Takou was established, two batteries were added to the north and south of Kaohsiung Harbor. The latter, Chihou Battery, was larger and kept in better condition. At the entrance were doors and walls with traditional Chinese design of character "eight". On both sides were characters of Shuanghsi, "double happiness", formed by red bricks. The two batteries passed into oblivion after the surrounding areas were designated as military control zone after Taiwan's restoration in 1945. Now they are open to visitors. Indeed, they have unique styles and textures and are listed as second-grade national historic monuments. |
