Kaohsiung City -- Introduction

Kaohsiung City is located in the southern part of Taiwan. It is both the largest city of Kaohsiung County, and the largest industrial center of Taiwan.

Kaohsiung City has stayed abreast of Taiwan's recent progress and prosperity. Continuously expanding and modernizing, the city strides into the 21st century as a newly emerging international metropolis.

In the past, Kaohsiung was called "Dagou" or "Dahgu", which was transliterated from the name of local aboriginal tribes. Disturbed by the violence caused by the pirates in the area, the "Takuo" local aboriginal tribe moved to the site of present-day Pingtung City in 1563. However, the name "Dagou" remained until 1920, when the city's name was changed to Kaohsiung.
