The Penghu Columnar Basalt Nature Reserve protects a unique basaltc lava formation to the east side of the Penghu achipelago (64 islands total). After the lava had been forced up following tectonic shifting, it began to cool around equally spaced centers. The resulting stone features a pattern of interesting cracks in vertical, horizontal and bottleneck directions.
