Creating a Conservation Ethic

As introduced by the Yearbook of the Republic of China:

Following four decades of rapid industrial development, a growing public and government awareness of the severe extent and ultimate cost of pollution is propelling the environmental protection movement in Taiwan. The government has taken a number of steps to protect the natural ecology, including the promotion of environmental products and the elimination of convenient but non-recyclable products from daily life.

Taiwan's strict enforcement of related laws, coupled with a sustained campaign to raise awareness and educate the masses, has inculcated a positive environmental protection and nature conservation ethic among the public.

Many government agencies and private conservation groups are carrying out a massive educational campaign aimed at cultivating a conservation ethic in Taiwan. At the forefront of conservation education is the Council of Agriculture (COA), which sponsors research projects, hosts international symposia, and subsidizes publicity campaigns. The COA also commissions other government agencies to provide conservation-related publications. Taiwan has an established record of cooperation with international conservation organizations. In 2002, the COA donated US$300,000 to support various international conservation activities and projects. Taiwan's international wildlife conservation efforts have continued into 2003.
