Garbage trucks go green in Kaohsiung
This article was published by the Taiwan Headlines on September 15, 2006. It reports that the Kaohsiung City Government recently launched an experimental biodiesel project, which aims to convert most of the city's garbage trucks to biomass energy. According to Kaohsiung City's Environment Protection Bureau, the project will last a year and involve an estimated distance of 4.9 million kilometres. The city government has earmarked about NT$20 million (US$610,000) to cover extra expenses in converting to biodiesel. Kaohsiung City conducted a similar, smaller-scale test three years ago. Now, switching 306 out of the city's 390 garbage trucks to biomass energy will make it the largest project of its kind so far in Taiwan. The B20 fuel used in this current project is also better than the BA9505 fuel that was tested three years ago. |
