Experts call for better land-use strategies
This article was written by Cecilia Fanchiang and published by Taiwan Journal on October 22, 2004. It is about the National Land-Use Planning Seminar held in Taipei on October 16 and 17. The National Land-Use Planning Seminar was organized by the Chinatimes Cultural and Educational Foundation. It featured open forums and presentation of research papers pertaining to issues of land use, conservation and post-disaster reconstruction. In the seminar, experts highlighted the need to conduct research on the impact of worldwide climatic change on the local environment. They also called for more government spending on preparations for natural disasters. More importantly, Taiwan needs to find a balance between economic development and conservation of natural resources. This article provides details on the recently proposed National Land Planning Act which, if passed in the Legislative Yuan, will promote the logical distribution of Taiwan's land resources to ensure sustainable and balanced development of the land. |
