Noise ControlAs introduced by the Taiwan Yearbook 2007:
Taiwan's dense urban environment and coexistence of residential and commercial properties makes noise a common subject of public nuisance complaints. The Noise Control Act authorizes local governments to maintain the tranquility of living environments by designating noise control areas where certain noisier activities are prohibited at specific times. Facilities such as construction sites and entertainment businesses are also subject to noise control. Measures have also been taken to cut noise pollution from motor vehicles and civil aircraft. All motor vehicles are required to pass noise inspection tests before being marketed in Taiwan. Twenty-four-hour automatic monitoring equipment has been installed at civil airports to gather noise data to be used by local governments when designating airport noise control areas and issuing compensation to neighboring communities. Low-frequency noise (20Hz to 200Hz) accounts for a considerable proportion of noise complaints but is difficult to measure with conventional sound measuring equipment. Therefore, new noise control standards that took effect in July 2005 specifically introduced new measuring methods to strengthen control over low-frequency noise pollution sources at business premises, such as water-cooling towers, air coolers, ventilators, and air-conditioning systems. |
