Daguan Mountain (Daguanshan) Nature Reservatory

Daguan Mountain is located between Fusing (Fuhsing) Township of Taoyuan County and Wulai Township of Taipei County in northern Taiwan. Its original name is La La Mountain (Lalashan).

In 1973, a big chump of giant tree was discovered in Daguan Mountain as a reservation region. The area has the biggest area of juniper forest in Taiwan and became the Daguan Mountain Natural Landscape Reservation in 1986. The types of trees found here include the green Chinese maple, the red maple, the beech, and other trees with colored leaves.

Daguan Mountain's giant trees are between 500 and 3000 years of age. Among them, the No. 5 giant juniper is the oldest. It is estimated to be 2800 years old.

Meanwhile, the No. 18 giant juniper has a trunk peripheral measurement of 188 foot long. It also looks greyish, like a tree that is dying, but at the top of the tree fresh green leaves sprout every year. The No. 9 giant juniper, on the other hand, is of a very rare kind of juniper that normally grows at about 1500-1600 meters above sea level. Its leaves, shaped like a bud scale, grow abundant on the branches. It also produces small cones that look rather cute.

In addition to the giant junipers, all kinds of rare birds can be found in Daguan Mountain. It should be noted that camping and barbecuing is prohibited within this area in order to prevent forest fires.
