Taoyuan County -- Introduction

Taoyuan County is a plateau located in the northwestern part of Taiwan, with Taipei County and Ilan (Yilan) County adjacent to it.

The county is named "Taoyuan" (which means "peach garden" in Chinese) because of the peach trees in full blossom as its major attraction. Nowadays Taoyuan County is famous for other scenic spots as well. These include the Shimen Reservoir, which was the largest of its kind in Far East when it was first opened to the public in 1964.

Taoyuan County is where the Chiang Kai-shek International Airport is located. As the gateway to Taiwan, the airport handles tens of millions local and international passengers every year.

Other well-known scenic spots in Taoyuan County include Dasi (Tahsi) historic streets; Cihu (Tzuhu), where the mausoleum of late president Chiang Kai-shek is located; the Window on China, which hosts a great collection of miniature structures; Jiaoban Mountain (Jiaoban Shan); Daguan Mountain (Daguan Shan), where the sacred woods stand; and Fushing Township, the starting point of the mountainous Northern Cross-Island Highway.

Taoyuan County's famous local snacks include the soft peanut drops of Lungtan Township and dried tofu of Dasi (Tahsi) Township. Visitors will definitely have to give them a go.
