Jinshan
Jinshan is located at the northeastern corner of Taiwan. It faces the sea, backs by the mountains and is closely adjacent to the Pacific Ocean and the Taiwan Strait. Jinshan's former name, Jin Bao Lane, derives from the translation of the society name of the Ping Pu aboriginal tribe. The place was firstly inhabited by the Ping Pu tribesmen. During the Ching (Qing) Dynasty, Jinshan's population increased rapidly due to large groups of migrants from Mainland China's Fujian Province. During the Japanese occupation of Taiwan (1895-1945), the name Jin Bao Lane was changed to Jinshan. After the ROC government relocated to Taiwan in 1949, it was furthered changed to the present name of Jinshan Township. Jinshan's inhabitants are mainly farmers. The town is well known for its agricultural produce such as sweet potatoes, asparagus, flowers, bamboo shoots and vegetables. Today, Jinshan possesses a well developed traffic network with roads leading to Shihmen and Tamshui (Danshui) in the west. To the east, the town is connected to Keelung. Southwards, it reaches the Yangmingshan National Park. Since Jinshan situates right in the middle of Taiwan's northern tourist area, it has become the favorite holiday spot for local tourists. Jinshan has many scenic spots. Jin Bao Lane Street, for example, is the oldest street in the town. At the western end of this street locates a Chang Saint Wang Temple, an architectural proof that the ancestors of the locals came from Mainland China's Fujian Province. Although the majority of the buildings by the sides of the street had been renovated and renewed, there are still some left intact and remained with their originality. Meanwhile, Chi Hu Temple is where the locals worship Matsu, Goddess of the Sea. In fact, this is the local religious center. The Jinshan Youth Activity Center was established by the China Youth Corps. The center has accommodation facilities, catering service, conference room, barbecue area, camping site, sea swimming pool, and a hot spring gymnasium. Here is an interesting article to read:
