Tamshui (Danshui)

Tamshui (Danshuei) used to be called Huwei. It is located some 20 kilometers north-west of Taipei City, at the mouth of the Tamshui (Danshui) River. The town was once the largest port in Taiwan. Today, it is a fishing village that bosts a fine university (Tamkang University), an excellent beach (Shalun Beach), well-preserved traditional architecture, and plenty of delicious seafood, such as the famous "iron eggs". The town is a favorite for local tourists.

There are plenty of good places to visit in Tamshui (Danshui). Apart from Fort San Domingo, the Memorials to George Leslie Mackay and the Oxford College, where historical buildings are well preserved, visitors can take a stroll through the town's many old streets and sit down at an old bench along the riverbank to wait for a marvelous sunset.

Visitors can take a ferry ride across the Tamshui (Danshui) River to Bali, which is cradled by the famous Guanyin Mountain. However, visitors can only see the mountain's outline clearly from the Tamshui (Danshui) side -- the outline is very much like a peacefully sleeping lady.
