Hsinchu County -- Introduction

Hsinchu was once called "Chuchien", which means "trenches of bamboo" in Chinese. The county used to be a paradise on earth where people of the Pingpu aboriginal tribe hunted deers and other large mammals. Even the Dutch and Spanish occupations of Taiwan during the 16th century did not disturb this area much at all.

Today, Hsinchu enjoys its fame as a key position of culture and science. The Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park is the home of many local and international high-tech companies and manufacturers. The county is also known in Taiwan for its windy winter weather.

Hsinchu County is also a transit point on the way to Shihtoushan (Shihtou or "Lion's Head" Mountain) and Tapachienshan (Tapachien Mountain or the "Wine Bucket", as called by the locals). Just outside Hsinchu City is the Grass Lake, a much favored scenic for local tourists.
