GIO launches nationwide Internet survey to come up with a new image for Taiwan

This article was written by Cecilia Fanchiang and published by the Taiwan Journal on December 23, 2005. It reports that the Government Information Office recently launched an islandwide promotional campaign titled "Show Taiwan to the World", in order to come up with a new image for Taiwan.

A recent government survey shows that Taiwanese people are recognized internationally as being friendly, hardworking and peace-loving folks. Now the people in Taiwan are asked to choose their favorite from a group of 24 images, and pick the one they think best represents Taiwan in the international community. "The selected icon is meant to create a basis for a recognition system that can be used by the government to promote Taiwan to the world," said Pasuya Yao, head of the Government Information Office.

The 24 images are essentially photographs of various scenic spots around the island, indigenous rituals and products that are made in Taiwan. They include pictures of the Yushan National Park, the Taiwanese opera, hand puppets, local temples, semiconductors, various types of Taiwanese food and the Taipei 101 building. More detailed information about the selection process is provided in this article.
