Taitung County -- Introduction

Located in the southeast corner of Taiwan, Taitung literally means "east Taiwan". Although the east coast is mountainous and often battered by typhoones, Taitung County is like a paradise that is free of the feverish growth and industrialization that so characterizes the rest of Taiwan.

Taitung City is located on the delta of the Beinan River, at the southern tip of the rift valley. In addition to offering transportation links to the rest of Taiwan proper, it is also the main departure point for many interesting trips, particularly to Lanyu (Orchid Island) and the Green Island.
