Our Goal

The Naughties Club was established in March 2005. Its current members are those who have been born since January 1, 2000. Its future members will include those who are born before the end of 2009.

All in all, members of this club are "The Naughties" - individuals who belong to the first decade of the 21st century.

The 21st century is the age of global communication and cultural diversity. The goal of The Naughties Club is to form a friendship network among individuals who are of the same generation and who are from different geopolitical and cultural backgrounds.

As these individuals grow up, they very likely will have a chance to travel to other countries and to become interested in other cultures. The Naughties Club is therefore a great channel through which individuals may contact and learn from each other's experiences of life.

For example, the editor of this newsletter, Christine Sun, lives in Melbourne, Australia. Her friends, many of whom already have children, are living in various cities in Taiwan and the United States.

Through the friendship network formed via The Naughties Club, Christine's child will grow up feeling familiar with the cultures of Australia, Taiwan and the United States. He will also have plenty of chance to travel around these three societies and experience their many wonders.

Most importantly, he will have many friends from other cultures who are interested in visiting Australia and who will certainly be warmly welcomed in Melbourne.

In short, the goal of The Naughties Club is to help its members become global citizens, by bridging over existing geopolitical and cultural barriers among them.

In the next thirty years, the members of The Naughties Club will become the leaders of their societies. It is important to help them form a multicultural mind during the early development of their brilliant careers. [Top]

Recent Stars

  • William Y. will be two years old on April 10, 2005. When he was little, he was allergic to milk and suffered ear infection as a result. However, he is now a healthy and happy boy who looks very much like his father. William is living in Pennsylvania, U.S.A., where his parents are pursuing their academia careers. In June 2004, William had a trip back to Taiwan, where his parents were born. He met a little friend called Morgan (see below) and had a lot of fun playing with him.
  • Morgan will also be two years old this year. His birthday is on May 9. Before Morgan was born, his parents were worried that his father would miss his birth due to a business trip. However, Morgan kindly decided to arrive early so that his father could be there to welcome his coming to this world. When Morgan was little, he enjoyed listening and "talking" on the phone. He also loved dancing with music, like his mother. Morgan is living in Taipei, Taiwan.
  • Gavin O.'s birthday is on June 8. He will also be two this year. When Gavin was little, he had a nanny looking after him because both of his parents had to work. (Gavin's father is a pilot who enjoys the big blue sky.) However, he has always had a wonderful family and constantly brings love and laughter to his proud parents. Gavin lives in California, U.S.A, where his family has a big dog called Henry. Just recently (February 2005) Gavin celebrated the birth of his new sister. In his mother's words, Gavin "is just giddy about his little sister (honeymoon period)"! [Top]

Do You Know?

Back in the end of the 20th century, facing the dawning of the new millennium, people began to wonder how to name the first decade of the 21st century.

A lot of suggestions were made - the Zeroes, the Singles, the 2000s, the Double-Os, the Oh-Ohs, the Y2Ks, and the Millies.

However, one must agree that none of these silly tags sounds as good as the term "The Naughties".

According to supporters of the term "The Naughties", "naught" means "zero" and "naughty" indicates "fun".

A typical image associated with the term shows a toothy, cowlicked, not altogether innocent- looking boy. Its designer, Australia-born David Wales who works in New York City, U.S.A., points out that the term "The Naughties" suggests creative subversion.

In the words of Wales, the term "The Naughties" will help "jumpstart the next millennium with ten years of irreverent innovation".

Most importantly, fans of the term "The Naughties" argue that it "implies innocence and mischief. It's about extending boundaries in a playful way".

Perhaps this is what people in the 21st century need - a fun, innovative way to deal with the world, to be creative and flexible, and to enjoy work and life.

Let us all become a little bit "naughty" in this new age! [Top]
